Henley Royal Regatta 1949 - Diamond Challenge Sculls
    st. lb.
  R.J. Lutz 12 11
Distance Barrier Fawley Finish
Wed 29 June bye
Thur 30 June lost to J.H. Trinsey (Notre Dame Club of Philadelphia, USA) nro 2.30 4.11 8.57

"Lutz started at 31½, Trinsey at 38. Trinsey led by nearly a length at the top of the Island, but they were level at the Barrier. A close race developed. Neither could gain more than a few feet. Lutz fell out of his boat 100 yards from the Finish, and Trinsey sculled on alone." [HRR]

"R Lutz, Quintin BC, rowed a grand race against the brilliant American, JH Trinsey. The latter had to go all out to lead by a little over a length at the enclosure, when alas! Lutz, completely rowed out, hit the booms and overturned. It was a very gallant effort by a comparatively unknown oarsman." [The Times]

(In most of 1949's other regattas Lutz sculled as Crowland RC rather than as Quintin, and he sculled as Crowland in the Diamonds in the three following years.)
