"Locke and Crooks led at once, were three quarters of a length ahead at the quarter mile, and three and a half lengths ahead at the Barrier. They led by many lengths at Fawley, and although Dalley and Winckless made several spurts Locke and Crooks won by 22 seconds." [HRR]

After Henley, Dalley & Winckless formed a coxed four with PT Summers & MJ Hart, who had raced in the Goblets as Corpus Christi & Peterhouse, Cambridge. Rowing as Quintin, the four won the national trials and rowed as Great Britain in the 1971 European Championships. Although the four rowed as Quintin, it was more of a past and present Cambridge University crew. Dalley & Winckless had both been blues at Cambridge (Dalley in 1970, Winckless from 1967 to 1969), and Summers & Hart were in the 1971 Goldie crew. The "Quintin" four beat a Cambridge University four to win the national trials. It must have been rather a grudge match, given that Summers and Hart had not been selected for that year's blue boat."
