Fri 6 July (SF) | bt K.R. Thomas & J.H. Waizeneker (Maidenhead) | 1½ L | 4.30 | 8.32
"Daniel & London were two lengths ahead at Fawley and won by one and a half lengths" [HRR] "The first heat of the Goblets was poor racing, Quintin winning comfortably" [The Times] "Quintin rowed 44 and Maidenhead 43 in the first minute but Quintin gained steadily from the start and were clear at the top of the Island. At Fawley, Quintin were nearly three lengths up in 4min 30 sec. Maidenhead spurted hard from the Mile Post but Quintin held on to win" [The Times] "Maidenhead went off at 43 and Quintin at 44. Quintin held 2 L before Fawley (4m 30s) and over that at the third signal. Maidenhead closed to 1½ L at Mile, striking 35 to Quintin's 30, but stroke caught a crab near the finish." Sat 7 July (F) | lost to G.C. Killick & J. Beresford (Thames) | easily | 4.09* | 8.57
(HRR records and the 1929 Rowing Almanack both show the time as 9.57, whereas The Times had 8.57. Given the time at Fawley, 8.57 seems much more plausible.) "Daniel & London soon took the lead and were two lengths ahead at Fawley. After this Killick & Beresford came up, passed them, led by two lengths at the mile and won easily" [HRR] "Quintin were leading by 2L before Fawley and again at third signal, but Thames reversed matters at the Mile." [1929 Rowing Almanack] "Thames rowed 11, 20, and 39 and Quintin 12, 22, and 42 in the first quarter, half and full minute. There was a level race up the Island, after which Thames drew ahead rapidly. They were two lengths up at Remenham and three at Fawley in 4min 9 sec. The Quintin pair were outpaced and Thames paddled home very easy winners." [The Times] (The Times seems to be describing almost a different race from that in Henley Records and the Rowing Almanack. In particular they disagree completely about the position at Fawley.) |
