Final Racing News
Quintin picked up a win in Vet D in the Veteran Fours Head with a
crew comprising Dick Findlay (str), Richard Ratcliffe, Charlie
Harrison, Nick Ryan. As well as winning their category they were 7th
overall.
In the Scullers Head on the 2nd December Charlie Harrison won Vet
D and Frank Webb won Vet G making it 5 wins out of 5 races for Frank
in the autumn sculling season
Horse Racing Evening
On Thursday the 16th November Quintin and West 4
Harriers are jointly holding a Horse Racing Evening in the club
room. There will be six filmed races, with betting on each. The
first race is at 8.30pm. All members and friends are welcome.
AGM
Mark Chatwin was elected Captain
at this year's AGM. Graham Lloyd and John Peters will be his Vice
Captains.
Subscriptions for 2006/7
The meeting voted in favour of the committee's proposal that the
subscription for the year starting 1 September 2006 will be £300,
that the rack fee for private sculling boats will be £130 and that
there will be a £15 discount for those who pay before 1 November.
Thus those without a sculling boat rack should pay £285. Those
with a rack should pay £415.
Please give your cheque (payable to Quintin Boat Club) to any
member of the committee or send it to the treasurer, Bill Burbage,
at “Beechlee”, Bank Green, Bellingdon, Chesham, Bucks, HP5 2UT.

The Great River Race
The annual Great River Race – a race for traditional rowing boats
from Twickenham to Greenwich – is next Saturday morning, 16
September. About 300 boats are expected to take part. The race is
handicapped so that the slowest boats start first.. The fastest
boats will probably start about an hour and a quarter afterwards.
The first boats are expected to reach Chiswick Bridge at about
10.30am.
The river will not be closed (except for the stretch from Eel Pie
Island to Richmond Bridge, which will be closed from 9am to about
11am). However, given the large amount of overtaking that will take
place and given that most of the coxes will be unfamiliar with the
Tideway, it may be advisable not to be on the river at the same time
as the race.
But why not come down to the club and watch the race in comfort.

Autumn Sculling Group
Nick Ryan is co-ordinating and coaching a sculling group for male
and female scullers of all standards who want to race and are
committed to training regularly. Outings are at 7.30 Saturdays and
Sundays. The schedule is available

Closing VIIIs and AGM
To celebrate the end of the season, Quintin will
be holding its club scratch eights on Sunday 24 September . All
members, ex-members and friends are welcome, and there will be pint
tankards for the winners. If you want to row, be down at the club by
10am to enter your name. The racing will take place as soon as
possible after that. Be prompt: if you aren't at the club by 10am
you won't get a row.
The Annual General Meeting will be held
immediately after the scratch eights – probably starting at about 12
noon. The agenda will include the captain's and treasurer's reports,
the election of the captain and committee, and the subscription for
the year starting 1 September.
There are nine positions on the committee,
including the captain, vice-captain (although at present we have two
joint vice-captains), treasurer and secretary. Please let the
secretary have any nominations.
Although the 2006/7 subscription will be set at
the AGM, you are welcome to make an on account payment before
then equal to the current subscription (£275 plus £125 for a
sculling boat rack). If the AGM votes for an increase, you can pay
the extra after the meeting. Cheques should be made payable to
Quintin Boat Club and handed to any committee member.
Stourport Regatta
An impressive haul saw 9 wins over the weekend including
Quintin's first womens' crew sculling win - Pippa and Belinda in
Senior 2.
On the mens' sculling front Richard Ratcliffe moved up to Senior
2 and Tim Cowley reached the Novice final having only taken up
sculling in May. Roy and John secured another win in Veteran
doubles.
The Captain maintained his Stourport record by picking up a win
in the Senior 2 VIII and in the mixed double with Pippa pulling him
along :)
Maidenhead Regatta
The Mens Novice Four won their pots in an 11 boat field. . The
crew were Chris Tobias, John Hayes, Rory Carson, Ewen Mitchell with
coach John Peters coxing.
The Bucket and Badger double won Vet B/C 2x and Belinda increased
her stranglehold on the pot charts with another sculling win.
Henley T & V
In a straight final of Veteran B/C double sculls at Henley T&V,
Roy Davies and John Ferrario beat Christchurch RC by 3 lengths, with
Eton Excelsior easily in 3rd place. The
results of all the finals are available here. Other QBC crews to
reach their finals were the S2 8 and S2 4-, who lost by ½ length and
¾ length respectively.
Molesey Amateur
Following on from her win at Henley Vets Belinda (entered as
Warden) picked up two more wins at Molesey, moving her clear of the
now ex-novice women at the top of the pot winners table. She won WS2 1X winning
two rounds against Molesey (4l), Globe (1.25l) and beating Harris of
Eton Excelsior in the final. In WVB 1X she beat Johnson of Eton
Excelsior.
The other Quintin crews at Molesey were:

The mens' S2 8: they won two rounds against Molesey (3/4
length) and Thames (1.25 l) but lost the final to Bath Meles BC.

N 4+: won two rounds against Guildford and Twickenham but
lost the final to the Cambridge University Lightweights rowing
as Granta BC.

Richard Ratcliffe in S3 1X: won two rounds but lost the
final.

S2 2-: Andras and Ewan won one round against Guildford and
then lost the semi-final to another Guildford pair.
Kingston Regatta
On Sunday, Quintin won WN 4+ at Kingston Borough Regatta.
"The final was the fifth race of the day for 3 of the crew.
In the final they rowed through the Kingston A crew that had
beaten Quintin in the first round. Quintin comfortably won a 3
boat repechage and beat Kingston's B crew in a hard semi-final.
In between times they fitted in second place in the Senior 4
final."
John Peters
The Quintin crew was: Katie Taylor, Nicole Hughes, Naiome Carter,
Sibille Pletsch, Bethany Swartwood (cox).
The win moves Nicole, Naiome and Sibille to the top of the Pot
Winners table level with Belinda Davies. This is the first time we
have seen women top the table at Quintin.
Quintin at Henley
The Wyfold IV grabbed the attention of the press
in a dramatic finish to their first round race against Norwich. Dov,
keen to pick up a new accolade unrelated to timing, picked up on an
alternative finish to the regatta and allegedly stopped rowing a few
strokes from the line. In danger of being warned for steering QBC
nudged themselves over the line. Full results here.

Wyfold IV pre-qualify
Quintin's Wyfold IV of Mark Chatwin, Kenny Almand, Fraser
McKevitt and Dov Ohrenstein have pre-qualified for the Wyfold
Challenge Cup at Henley. They have so far raced at the Met and at
Marlow

Women's IV+ win at B&M
Quintin's Women's Senior 4 cosed four won at
Barnes and Mortlake. The crew was (from bow) Naiome Carter, Nicole
Hughes, Caroline Bansal and Sibille Pletsch and was coxed by John
Peters. They beat HSBC in the heat and St Paul's in the final.
First Singles Win for Quintin Women at a Regatta
Belinda Davies became our first winner of a
women's single sculling event at Twickenham Regatta. Belinda won
Senior 2 beating Berry from our neighbours Mortlake Anglian and
Alpha and Jordan of Walton in the final.
The men's novice four won two rounds, beating the
Lea in the first round, but then lost in the semi-final. 10 crews
were chasing that elusive qualifying novice win that day.

Aiguebelette 2006
The club training camp has seen a diverse contingent of QBC
members and associated friends. A full report has been promised in
due course together with pictures. Good luck to the Vice Presidents'
Abbagnales in the big 2k showdown!
Borne at Chiswick Bridge Regatta
3 crews took part in Borne - the women's novice four narrowly
losing to the eventual winners Mortlake; the women's Senior 4 crew
who lost to Walbrook and the Men's Novice four who won their semi
but lost to Canford in the final.
Potential Rio trip for the Centenary
Our ever busy cultural attaché
Geoff Garbo has been helping the Centenary Committee make
contact with Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama rowing club in Rio de
Janeiro for a potential visit in spring 2007 to be followed by a
reciprocal visit from the Brazilians. We are hoping to establish a
programme and dates shortly so that we can take advantage of some
cheap flights etc. From what Geoff has told us rowing on the laguna
will be an amazing experience and a number of members are already
keen.
For those of you who follow Brazilian football it
may interest you to know that the club is the same as the Vasco
football club. In fact many Brazilian football clubs are named some
variant of "clube de regatas," or regatta club. This is because the
clubs began as rowing clubs and only later took up football. That is
also why the flags of Flamengo and Corinthians have crossed oars as

Chiswick Results
Saturday 29th April saw the first running of the two lane regatta
format. The regatta ran to time and was treated to some gloriously
strong sunshine although the member on CruiserWatch saw none of it.
Those privy to the radios on the day were treated to regular updates
from our cultural attaché - "Allo - this
is Geoff from the Bell" and "this is Geoff from the Ship".

Chiswick Amateur Regatta Draw
The draw is still being sorted as of Sunday evening. A large
entry has ensured the maximum number of races allowed by both the
Tide and the racing formats agreed as part of the safety plan. Due
to new Port of London Authority restrictions on all tideway
regattas, we cannot run any three-boat races this year and we are
obliged to have a longer than usual break at low tide. As a result,
we have been unable to accommodate all the entries received and we
have had to scrap several events that we would otherwise have held.
Sorry if yours is one of the events that has lost out.
Captain runs the Marathon
A svelte Dave Ford ran today's London Marathon. Full details will
be posted here when he gathers his breath.
Bob Slade Sculling Trophy
Congratulations are especially due to Kenny Almand (the overall
winner, retaining the Bob Slade cup by just one second) and to Ewen
Mitchell (the winner of the sealed handicap and also the winner of
the novice prize).
Knowing exactly how to motivate club sculling at Quintin, Bob
Slade, who originally donated the silver cup for the championship,
gave a generous donation to cover several drinks for all the
competitors!

Heads Weekend
This weekend saw the traditional end of the winter rowing season
with the Eights Head and the Vets Head. Quintin had two crews in the
Head of the River Race. Quintin 1 finished in the Top 100; a
venerable Quintin 2 came 213th.
In the Veterans Head of the River Race Quintin entered a Vet B
VIII which romped home in 7th overall and the Barflies - full

The end of an era
Ernie Vincent, Quintin's last professional boatman, sadly died at
the weekend.
There is not a Quintin oarsman around from that period that does not
have a favourite story of Ernie in his time (1970 till his
retirement in 1988) at the University
Boathouse. Full details of the funeral will be placed here when
known if the family wish.
Quintin 10th at Kingston Head
Quintin finished 10th at this year's Kingston Head sandwiched
between two London VIIIs and ahead of UL Tyrian.
Teddington Sculls
As you may know, the Tideway Scullers Head is not being held this
year. This means that Teddington Sculls, on Saturday 1 April, is the
only sculling head before the regatta season. (It's a week after the
Head of the River and a fortnight before the club sculling
championship.) If there is sufficient demand the club will take a
trailer. Obviously, those of you without a roof rack won't want to
enter unless you can be certain that a trailer will be going. To
enable us to judge likely demand, please let the
secretary know
know if you would probably want to make use of the trailer if it was
going to Teddington Sculls.

here. It's not just for single sculls: doubles and quads can
also enter.
Club Sculling Championship
The club sculling championship will be a head race from the Pink
House to Quintin on Easter Saturday 15 April at 10.30am. (Because of
the tides or clashes with other events, the Easter weekend is the
only suitable weekend in April.) The race will be about two hours
before low tide, so the water should be flat.
The arrangements will be the same as last year. The silver cup
(donated by Bob Slade) will be presented to the overall winner.
There will also be a prize for the winner on handicap.
In addition to the overall prize and the handicap prize, there
will be prizes for the winners of status and age categories. I will
accept entries for any categories, but will combine categories for
which there are few entries.
Entries close on Thursday 13 April. Numbers will be issued to
competitors on the day of the race. The starting order will be based
on last year's finishing order, with new entrants at the back.

Quiz Night
On the
evening of Thursday 23 March, Quintin and West 4 Harriers are
holding a quiz night in the club room, starting at 8.30. All
members and friends are welcome. 4 or more people per team. The
entry fee is only £1 per person and there will be a prize for the
winning team.
Quintin Eights Head
A glorious winter morning saw the
relaunch of the Quintin Head. 31 crews took part on a bitterly cold
morning with some visiting crews gaining some valuable Tideway race
experience. A welcoming fire and the potato and leek soup in Quintin
Boathouse awaited crews at the finish.
Quintin 1 beat the University of Bristol by 2
seconds to pick up the overall pennant. Bristol won S2. Mortlake won
the Women's event overall and picked up the S3 Men's pennant.
University College London won Mens S4 and Kings picked up Womens S4.
Tideway Scullers won Vet E.
Race Secretary Martin Carr was pleased to see an
incident free race with close racing and no penalties given out. No
sooner was he back in the clubhouse and handing out result sheets
than he was campaigning for entries for next year.
Quintin would like to thank all the officials and the clubs that
helped with launches as well as all the competitors that took part
in the event.

ARA sanctions Quintin Head 2006
Martin Carr has received the go ahead from Chris George and the
ARA Competions Committee for Quintin to stage their Head from
Hammersmith Bridge to Chiswick Bridge on Saturday 28th January.
