It's a long time since there was any sherry on offer for guests at the Christmas "Sherry" Party, so we don't get Jock Wishart's annual visitation these days. However, the tradition of the Plum Puddings Handicap Race has been revitalised and was rowed on a crisp and sunny but cold Sunday morning as a warm-up for the serious business of the pre-Christmas social. Ten eights took to the water and rowed in procession from the Pink House to the Quintin flagpole. Mortlake, Anglian and Alpha took all the prizes - longest club name, most crews and silliest hats, but more significantly, the first three crews across the line. The Quintin first crew, but without their captain, started strongly at the rear of the field, but faded somewhat after Brentford Docks, and the Quintin Bar Flies kept up their record by letting everyone else cross the line before them. They were ably assisted in this endeavour by coxswain Geoff Garbow, who performed a pretty neat handbrake turn to take the crew round the UL buoy without hitting any of the opposing crews clustered around them.
With all the boats safely stowed away, it was then on to the real challenge of emptying a firkin of Gales H.S.B. and restoring energy levels with a plate or two of chilli con carne, with which Geoff and his associates demonstrated their catering prowess.
The race was relocated to Dorney Lake, owing to inclement conditions on the Thames. The Quintin entry was thus considerably depleted as only two singles and a double were willing or able to transfer to the new venue. Richard Ratcliffe won Vet B 1x in 8 min. 56.6 sec, finishing 26th in Division 1. Nick Ryan finished 52nd in Division 1 in a time of 9 min. 41.8 sec, and Frank Webb and Dick Findlay were the only Vet G double, completing the course in 9 min. 2.7 sec. (35th in Division 1).
Quintin had fifteen scullers entered for the Scullers Head, and came away with our leading sculler in the top 30 and two veteran pennants. The club's results were as follows:

Well done to everybody for taking part and in particular to Mark, Tom and Frank for their excellent results.

We had five entries in the Kingston Small boats Head, but unfortunately the event was cancelled because of the strong currents on the Kingston reach (and most of the upper Thames). It was probably a blessing in disguise for many of the competitors, as the weather was pretty univiting - cold, windy and generally depressing.
Henley Sculls Head of the River was on Saturday 17th November. There were seven QBC entries: Kenny Almand won Vet B in 12:42, Nick Ryan (VC) did 13:04, Charlie Harrison won Vet D in 13:01, Geoff Potts was runner-up in Vet E, in 13:28, only 7 seconds behind winner Sean Morris and 59 seconds ahead of the next Vet E, Tom Bishop won Vet F in 13:20, Frank Webb tied as winner of Vet G in 14:23, and Hugh Davy (VH) did 16:39.

A Vet F 4- very bravely took to the water for this event and completed the course in 24 min. 17.27 sec, finishing 95th. Crew: Paul Gunn, Charlie Shelton, Francis Brown (substituting for Bill Burbage) and Jim Moyes.
The 1st IV raced in the Head of the River Fours on Saturday 3rd November. They finished a creditable 124th overall in a time of 20:53.70 and were 8th out of 28 Senior 2 coxed fours. Crew: Dov Ohrenstein, Richard Ratcliffe, Mark Chatwin, Kenny Almand, Catt Campbell (cox).

Our scullers were out in force at Marlow and chalked up four more pennant wins. Mark Chatwin came second overall, Charlie Harrison won Vet D, Geoff Potts won Vet E, Tom Bishop won Vet F and Frank Webb won Vet G/H/I Handicap. The eleven Quintin entries in starting order were: Mark Chatwin (S1), Richard Ratcliffe (S2), Kenny Almand (VB), Roy Davies (VC), Nick Ryan (VC), Charlie Harrison (VD), Malcolm Cook (VE), Geoff Potts (VE), Tom Bishop (VF), Frank Webb (VG), Hugh Davy (VH). It is rumoured that Frank Webb kept up his record for finding obstructions and collided with another sculler, who had apparently emerged from the undergrowth without warning. As mentioned above, this did not prevent him from winning a pennant. Well done, Frank!
It is with regret that we were informed of the death on Friday, 26th October, of Andy Dawson, a prominent member of the club in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was the 2 man of the Quintin crew that won the VIIIs race for England at the Home International in 1968, pictured here.
We had 4 entries for this race: S1 1x Mark Chatwin, VetC 1x Nick Ryan, VetG 1x Dick Findlay and VetG 1x Frank Webb.
Mark finished a very creditable 3rd in the single sculls, only 10 seconds behind the winner (who also came 2nd!) Nick was top of the Vet Cs and Dick was top of the Vet Gs. For those who didn't see it, Frank had an argument with Walton Bridge - he would, of course, have beaten Dick otherwise (so he says). Full results here.
We had 5 entries for this race: S1 2- Chatwin/Ohrenstein, S3 2x Ratcliffe/Almand. Vet C 2x Ryan/Harrison, Vet E 2- Lloyd/Hine and Vet F 2x Potts/Bishop.
Congratulations to Nick Ryan and Charlie Harrison, who won the Vet B/C 2x division on handicap, and to Geoff Potts and Tom Bishop, who won the Vet F/G/H 2x category outright.

Before the AGM, a photograph was taken of all club members present, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Quintin Boat Club out of the Polytechnic Rowing Club. Ladies, where were you? See picture above.
We had 11 entries for this race on Saturday 29th September: Mark Chatwin, Dov Ohrenstein (both S1), Belinda Davies (WS1), Roy Davies (VC), Charlie Harrison, Geoff Potts (both VD), Malcolm Cook (VE), Tom Bishop (VF), Frank Webb (VG), Hugh Davy (VH) and a Bishop/Potts double scull (VF). Unfortunately, Belinda and Roy had to scratch.
Mark came 3rd in S1. Charlie was 2nd in Vet D. Frank won the Vet EGH handicap and Tom won Vet F. Tom and Geoff won the Vet 2x. Well done everybody!

VetB 1X: Richard Ratcliffe had an excellent scull against the eventual winner of the event, Tetley of Marlow and lost by a canvas in an exciting race.
WVetB1X: Belinda Davies beat Ingram of Molesey in the semi final, but lost to West of Sons in the final.
Our Wyfold IV of Kenny, Richard, Mark and Dov had a good race against London B and lost by 1 length.
Congratulations to our Wyfold IV who notched up some good times at Marlow and pre-qualified. We wish them a great HRR experience at the 100th Henley in Quintin's history.
Many congratulations to the VIII who took just 2 hours 21 minutes to come in the top 20 crews out of a total of 1200 entrants. They all had a fantastic time and said that it was the experience of a lifetime. There are some great photos up in the bar - shortly to be available here.
Congratulations to Richard Ratcliffe who won Vet B/C 1X at Borne Regatta. His win has officially opened the 2007 pot winner's chart - and has thrown down the gauntlet to those of us who haven't actually entered anything as yet.
A plea for new racing photos please - lovely as John and Roy are to look at, we feel a new photo for our results page is due.
Another succesful camp in Aiguebelette now over. Blue skies and sunshine made a change from being rained on all week last year. The Novalaise Plage made us all extremely welcome, and the French squad gave us some competition on the lake. Thanks to all who took part, and thanks to Graham for all the towing.
Many thanks to John Peters and his team for organising the centenary regatta. Thanks to all who helped make the regatta a huge success.
The new coxed four will be named the 'Ernie Vincent' in memory of the club's last boatman who retired in 1988 and died last year. The boat naming ceremony will be at 12.30pm and will be performed by Jim and David Vincent, Ernie's two surviving sons. The ceremony will follow the presentation of the prizes for the club sculling championship. Everyone is welcome at both events.
Collier & Robinson will be at the club from about 7.30pm and will take measurements from anyone who is interested in purchasing a new club blazer.
Due to increased security we will have to clear the site of cars by about 10am. In order to return to watch the boat race from the club, members and visitors will need passes. Please keep an eye out for further news and how we can get passes for ourselves and our friends.
Over a most welcome shortened course ending at Chiswick, Quintin's VD crew are 66th. The girls are in a composite boat at 128th - WVetB.
Quintin I are setting off at 90th and Quintin II are 225th. Both are S2 status.
Their first outing from Quintin shores was this morning and we hear it cheered the quad up immensely. Will Wednesday early morning outings get more popular?
Well done to the Quintin ladies who came a respectable 93rd in the Head on Saturday. The crew were: Charlotte, Nina, Sibille, Pippa, Belinda, Naoime, Nicole and Melissa.
The University of Westminster are in discussions with a group of dragon-boaters who are planning a cross Channel attempt for charity and who hope to store their boat on the lawn. Hope to see you soon girls! Recognise anyone?
The morning after the Club dinner saw six members of the 1963 1st VIII joined by other crew members from the '60s boating from the Clubhouse for a trip down memory lane and a very enjoyable row. George Cox has kindly sent us a photograph taken after the outing. From L to R: Frances Brown, Ted Harris, George Cox, Jon Whitmore, Ced Nowell, Bob Mills and Pat Rayner. The eighth member of the crew was Clive Hole (not pictured).
